Pneumatic tools

1. What are Pneumatic tools/air compressors? Diagram examples of compressors and an explanation.

Show a range of different air compressors you might come across.

-What are pneumatic tools? Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air. Common types of

these air-powered hand tools that are used in industry include buffers, nailing and stapling guns,

grinders, drills, jackhammers, chipping hammers, riveting guns, sanders, and wrenches.

2. Safety when using an air compressor. Dangers and hazards, preventive action, and servicing.

  • Always wear proper PPE and make sure the tool is working just fine.PPE that needs to be

  • worn includes everything from safety glasses w/ side shields, full-face shields, face

masks, hearing protection, and sometimes even respiratory protection.

3. PPE when using air tools - general

Wear safety glasses or face shields, safety shoes, or boots.

4. Different types of air tool connections /tools

There are many different types of air fittings but most air tools use one of just a few types of
connector. The main things to consider are the fitting type and the thread size. Common
fixing types include ¼” BSP, ¼” PCL, and 3/8” NPT.

5. Specific safety when using

Impact driver - when using an air-impact wrench. Tie long hair back or secure under a cap. Wear

hearing protection when using this tool; an air-impact wrench creates a noise exposure of about

103 dB. Use clean, dry air at the manufacturer's recommended pressure (about 90 psi) to power

the air-impact wrench.

Air ratchet - Always wear safety glasses with side protectors when using an impact wrench. Never

wear a tie, loose clothing, a watch, rings, or jewelry when using an air-impact wrench. wrench. Only use impact wrench sockets that are specifically designed for this type of tool.

Dust off gun - A "quiet" nozzle (i.e. one with low noise emission) should be selected. Use effective guarding

methods that prevent a chip or particle (of any size) from being blown into the eyes or unbroken

skin of the operator or other workers nearby. You may also use barriers, baffles, or screens to

protect other workers near the operator if there is a risk of exposure.

Air riveter - Eye protection must always be worn by the operator to guard against flying fasteners

and debris. Keep unnecessary personnel away from the work area. Keep away from heat sources

and flammable substances. Risk Level Medium Control Measures Wear sunscreen, hat, long

sleeves, and long pants.
